International Arts Research Residence - Atelier 11

A historic hub for artistic exchange during the École de Paris period, Atelier 11 will become an International Arts Research Residency with the vision to support intercultural dialogue today through diverse cultural programming. To borrow French scholar Michel Espagne’s concept of “cultural transfers,” artists are often “vectors” in the cross-cultural exchanges that fuel the evolution of culture, politics and society. “To become attentive to cultural changes implies revising, at least virtually, the structures of collective memory… seeking imported elements, which are often marginalized.” - Espagne writes in his recent article on the subject.

Local and international artists and cultural professionals will have an opportunity to participate in this unique initiative, connecting past and present, local and global. The 2022-2023 residency season post-renovation will mark the beginning of the atelier’s new chapter as a place for research and exchange. Cultural and academic institutions in France and abroad are invited to become partners in this initiative to support artists from their countries and organize joint programs tailored to their mission.

The International Arts Research Residency at Atelier 11 will offer the following spaces for the residents’ use:

  • Communal studio/meeting space (~30m2 / 320 sq feet);
  • Multimedia arts presentation space (~30m2 / 320 sq feet);
  • Research library on modern and contemporary art;
  • Fully equipped kitchen;
  • Accommodation (two en-suite rooms)

The Atelier 11 residency will be focused on solo and duo projects that will run parallel to our international group programs, arts residencies for local practitioners, partner programs and events open to a broader community. An experimental collaborative platform for contemporary projects, it will be supported by 4 main pillars: intercultural exchange, research, professional development and creation.
