Self-directed Residency
The self-directed residency is designed to support the specific needs of an artist or other creative professional who wishes to carry out an independent research project, focus on studio work, or come for an exhibition or another engagement opportunity in Paris.
As opposed to our guided group sessions, the dates for independent self-directed residencies are flexible. The duration may vary in length from one to four weeks and can be arranged on a case-by-case basis.
We will do our best to tailor the residency based on the specific needs and interests of each artist. Starting with preparation before the arrival, we can reach out to the individuals and organizations relevant to the artist's project and mobilize research, logistics, and other resources that the artist might need during the time in residency.
"During and after the course of my self-directed residency in France, L'AiR Arts provided me with continued mentorship, encouragement and support. The time with L'AiR Arts proved invaluable to me as it marked an important shift that ended up being very prominent in my production over the last two years. The tentative collage works that I started experimenting with in France eventually culminated in several large-scale paper sculptures, collage installations as well as collage based video works. It played a large role in the incubation and realization of the next two solo exhibitions in Cape Town (2017) and Johannesburg (2018) and another I will have in London early 2019."
- Barbara Wildenboer, South Africa (Artist-in-Residence, 2016)
Primarily designed with visual artists in mind, this residency is also open to artists working in other art disciplines, as well as to curators, art historians and administrators.
Live, Work, Meet, Explore, Present or Exhibit
All resident artists are encouraged to make use of the multifunctional facilities of the centre for work, meetings, presentations, short-term exhibitions and informal gatherings.
Artists can use either provided shared studio space or engage in non-studio-based artistic and curatorial projects. Should you require a specific art production facility during your time in residency, we will help you secure an affordable space that suits your needs.
Although guided group programme will not be organized for this independent residency, participants will still have an opportunity to connect with other visiting artists and local professionals. In addition to providing shared studio space where artists can exchange their skills, we will facilitate other activities to foster intercultural and artistic exchange.
To maximize artist's exposure while in Paris, we also organize open studio events and other visits. In addition, artists are invited to submit an independent proposal to be part of the monthly Cultural programming at the FIAP Centre.
