Solo/Duo Residency at Atelier 11
Partnership Opportunity for the 2022 - 2023 Academic Season
L’AiR Arts is a not-for-profit organization based in Paris, France with a mission to support intercultural artistic exchange through international residency programs, while promoting diversity, inclusion, and international understanding through artistic and cultural heritage. A member of worldwide networks of artist residencies, L’AiR Arts provides residency opportunities for artists and cultural professionals from around the world since 2016. As part of the curated residency programs, L’AiR Arts offers inclusive cultural events that focus on intercultural exchange, professional development, research, and creation.
Located in the historic Montparnasse district, known as a hub for international artists during the École de Paris period, L’AiR Arts is currently engaged in a new cultural heritage project to preserve and restore a prominent historical artist atelier with the goal to establish a new International Arts Research Residence: Atelier 11. Built in the 1870s as part of the Cité Falguière artist community, it served as a working and living place to many French and international artists. During its 150 years of artistic history, it welcomed more than a hundred residents, some as famous as Amedeo Modigliani, Chaïm Soutine, Tsuguharu Foujita, Constantin Brancusi, and Paul Gauguin. The community provided artists with the opportunity for exchange, encouragement and shared inspirations, resulting in many important works that are now held in major museum collections around the world.
The vision for Atelier 11 is to revive the open and creative energy of the École de Paris and to support intercultural artistic exchange through diverse cultural programming. Scheduled to re-open after the restoration for 2022-23 academic year, it will offer a multi-functional three-level space, including communal studio and gathering space, multimedia art space, research library, and an accommodation space for visiting professionals. An experimental collaborative platform for contemporary projects, residencies at Atelier 11 will be focused on solo and duo projects that will run parallel to international group programs, residencies for Paris-based professionals, and events open to the broader community.

We were an eclectic family, united by a devotion to practice, by curiosity — by Paris itself. We were dancers, novelists, visual artists, poets, directors, performance artists, artistic directors, playwrights. We had come from Australia, South Korea, Armenia, Canada, the US, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands — to which places we have since returned, and where we are all now waiting out an indeterminate period of isolation and restriction imposed by global pandemic. Deprived of physical connection, the idea of conversation seems more important than ever. What follows is a collection of work from L’AiR Arts’ multidisciplinary residents — the continuation of a conversation begun in a grey Paris January, and which has already wound itself into idioms, artistic collaborations, and friendships.

My experience with L'AiR Arts has been rewarding from the beginning. I was very fortunate to receive partial scholarship from a patron overseas. The intensive research into the historical and contemporary art world during my residency in Paris, was well organised and accurately structured. What otherwise would have been inaccessible for me, the residency provided me with a unique exposure, which I believe to be as essential for a young artist like me starting to move her way into the global art world. I believe such experiences provided by L'AiR Arts, and supporters of art to be instrumental in an artist's career. Transparency, support and genuinity is everything that L'AiR Arts offered to me.
