Since 2021, L’AiR Arts Association has been spearheading a cultural heritage project to transition a historic artist studio Atelier 11 into an International Arts Research Residency dedicated to intercultural exchange.
Built in the 1875 as an artist-led initiative, Cité Falguière has served as a working and living place to more than a hundred French and international artists, including world-renowned Amedeo Modigliani, Chaïm Soutine, Tsuguharu Foujita, Constantin Brancusi, and Paul Gauguin. To continue this artistic heritage within contemporary culture, the last surviving studio of Cité Falguière -Atelier 11 continues to welcome artists and cultural professionals as an International Arts Research Residency. Preserving the living heritage of the École de Paris as a historic hub for intercultural artistic exchange, the aim of this project is to celebrate the significance of Cité Falguière as the world's longest-running international residency that accepted and nurtured artists throughout three centuries.

Calling All Artists and Cultural Professionals
A historic place built by artists for artists, for 150 years Atelier 11 Cité Falguière has operated as an artist-run space. Recently recognized as a heritage site, it continues to be supported by the artistic community of L’AiR Arts and Cité Falguière Associations. We invite our peers from all over the world to join us and contribute to the project while benefiting from the Atelier 11 residency in Paris.
The L’AiR Arts residency at Atelier 11 is focused on self-directed individual projects that run parallel to curated group programs, residencies for local professionals, partner programs and events open to a broader community. The program is designed to provide artists and cultural professionals with the opportunity to carry out artistic projects, develop their research, workshop new ideas, and build their international network. The purpose of the residency is to foster cross-cultural exchanges and collaborations between the local art ecosystem, including Paris-based artists, scholars, curators, art critics, institutions, and galleries, and international artists and cultural professionals. Residents have the opportunity to connect with other visiting and local professionals, exchange their ideas and skills, and present their work in various event-based formats, supported by the L'AiR Arts team.

Program Cost & Funding
L’AiR Arts aims to rebuild Atelier 11 as an affordable and inclusive space for research, exchange and creation open for artists and cultural professionals from all over the world - just as it was initially established as an artist-led initiative, providing residents with living and work space as well as community support.
Thanks to our current supporters, we are able to offer a number of funded and subsidized residencies, as well as fellowships to cover travel and/or material and research stipend. In addition, we accept submissions from candidates who are funded by other institutions and funders. The contributions help us to offset the costs of upkeep and preservation of the Atelier 11 historic residency, while also creating a nurturing and productive environment for the residents.
We therefore offer the following kinds of residency options:
Funded and subsidized residencies are limited and priority is given to candidates from less economically developed parts of the world based on the OECD’s DAC list, as well as artists at risk or in exile.
All selected candidates receive an invitation letter indicating the specific condition of their residency, which can be used to seek further funding from national and international agencies. For more information, please see our Funding page.
Application and Selection Process
L’AiR Arts International Residency Program at Atelier 11 mirrors the symbol for equality, = a horizontal exchange between artists and cultural professionals from diverse cultural backgrounds, across different ages and genders, working in various disciplines and at all stages of their professional careers.
Candidates from every country of the world are welcomed, however an intermediate level of English is required to effectively interact with others. To attend the program candidate must be sufficiently independent to manage their residency.
Applications may be submitted on an ongoing basis with two deadlines per year - October 31st and April 30th. Submissions are reviewed by a panel of international and Paris-based arts professionals. Residencies are awarded upon examination of each application and within the limits of available places. The selection process may include an open call application and a panel process, as well as nomination or invitation in relation to programs and partnerships. Residents can be nominated by our program partners, alumni, and guest curators.

Thank you so much L'AiR Arts for the fantastic time I've had during my solo residency at Atelier 11! I felt so supported and inspired such an awesome opportunity to continue my ongoing project on the history of biodiversity in Paris. Staying and working in the same atelier which 20th century masters such as Soutine was really phenomenal! I can't wait to see how Atelier 11 evolves in the future -- and I will definitely come back for more.
- Barbara Boissevain, United States (Artist-in-Residence, 2021/22)
As soon as I arrived at Atelier 11 in Cité Falguière, it was immediate for me to imagine it as a precious place emerging from the depths of history. As a curator, it allowed me to have a base in the city from which to freely come into contact with the cultural reality of Paris, its local artists and institutions. Allowing yourself a period of time for pure research is as much a luxury as a necessity for cultural professionals and Atelier 11 certainly offers a dimension of this type. I believe that the creation of a transversal network of institutions and people operating in the international cultural field is a shared objective that becomes achievable in the presence of a direction.
- Caterina Taurelli Salimbeni, independent curator and writer, Italy (Atelier 11 resident, 2023)
My experience with L'AiR Arts residency program at Atelier 11 has had a lasting impact on my career and artistic practice. Supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, it gave me an opportunity to develop ideas for new work, dialogue with international artists and broaden my awareness of the global artistic landscape and my place within it. As part of a self-directed residency at Atelier 11, I created a dance film that has since been screened internationally. The development I fostered through my experiences with L'AiR has catapulted me forward in my artistic vision, self assurance and body of work.
- Mayumi Lashbrook, dance artist, choreographer and Artistic Director of Aeris Körper Contemporary Dance, Canada (Atelier 11 resident, 2022)
During and after the course of my solo residency in France, L'AiR Arts provided me with continued mentorship, encouragement and support. In addition to offering space and time to work, the residency included numerous visits to cultural events. L’AiR Arts also arranged the opportunity to meet with local creatives and do a small presentation of my work in progress. The time with L'AiR Arts proved invaluable to me as it marked an important shift that ended up being very prominent in my production over the last two years. The tentative collage works that I started experimenting with in France eventually culminated in several large-scale paper sculptures, collage installations as well as collage based video works. It played a large role in the incubation and realization of the solo exhibitions in Cape Town (2017), Johannesburg (2018) and in London (2019)
