The L'AiR Arts Curated Residency Program is specially designed to enable international participants to situate their artistic exploration and practice within both the historical and contemporary context of art creation in Paris.
This immersive program offers a stimulating experience of intercultural exchange, research and professional development for international artists in Paris. This residency forefronts an emphasis on meeting, connecting and exchange, enabling residents to build lasting connections with peers, expand their network of Paris-based arts professionals and present their work to a wider audience.
Located in Montparnasse, known as a significant hub for international artists during the 20th century, the residency program honours the historical legacy of this prolific period of intercultural artistic exchange. The program offers a unique opportunity to learn more about the history of the École de Paris, where the ideas that shaped modern art as we know it were formed, while reflecting on Atelier 11 as central to the international artist community in the past and its renewed role in the future.
Residents participate in facilitated group sessions to exchange ideas and share their work. Professional research visits are organized to relevant arts and culture institutions and international art fairs falling within the duration of each program. The focus of each residency session ties into current events, to ensure programming which maximises the opportunities and engagement relevant to the activities within the local arts scene.
This residency facilitates balance between scheduled programming and independent research. Participants are welcome to focus on an individual research project or self-organize into small groups and explore Paris together. Like many artists visiting Paris from around the world, inspiration can be found everywhere—from the city's cafes, alleyways, parks, and bars.

Program Fees and Funding
While L’AiR Arts continues its efforts to restore the historic Atelier 11 residency and to create a sustainable, inclusive space for research, exchange, and creation, residency fees play a vital role in sustaining this mission. As a registered not-for-profit organization, L’AiR Arts structures its program fees to support essential residency costs, which are already partially subsidized thanks to the contributions of individual and institutional partners.
To support a truly immersive experience, the program fee (approximately €200 per day) covers accommodation, local transportation, creative work/meeting space, and curated programming. The exact fee varies according to the specific program, its duration, accommodation preferences, and available funding support.
Limited scholarship opportunities are available for artists and cultural professionals from less economically developed countries (the OECD’s ODA list), as well as artists at risk or in exile.
All selected candidates receive an invitation letter indicating the specific condition of their residency, which can be used to seek further funding from national and international agencies. For more information, please see our Funding page.
Application and Selection Process
This program is open to artists and cultural professionals of any age and stage in their career, as we are aiming for a cross-generational mix of professionals working in all media and disciplines.
Candidates from every country of the world are welcomed, however an intermediate level of English is required to effectively interact with others. To attend the program, candidates must be sufficiently independent to manage their residency. The residency program is available for invited candidates only and cannot accommodate guests or family members.
Applications may be submitted on an ongoing basis with two main review periods—after April 30th and October 31st. Submissions are reviewed by a panel of international and Paris-based arts professionals. The selection process may include an open call application and a panel process, as well as nomination or invitation. Residencies are awarded on a rolling basis throughout the year, upon examination of each application and within the limits of available places.
To apply please complete the online application form.

What an incredible two weeks it has been doing my research residency with L'AiR Arts. Thank you for bringing together a very diverse group of artists from around the world and in terms of practice. This experience really solidified the importance of collectives and international groups of people, especially artists, coming together, exchanging ideas and learning about the process of each artist, their artistic vision and how they approach executing their ideas. To top it all, we also had the amazing opportunity to see a crazy amount of art fairs and exhibitions in Paris that were all so unique and different!
- Anna Kavehmehr, Iran / Canada (Artist-in-Residence, 2024
I continue to be inspired by the collegiality, generosity and talent of the local and international artists who assembled in Paris for L’AiR Arts residency: I've quite literally never experienced anything like it!
- Helen Hopcroft, Australia (Artist-in-Residence, 2020)
My time at L'AiR Arts has been like the wind. Fast but hard hitting. I enjoyed emerging myself in the Parisian art world and am sure that this experience is going to stay fresh with me for a long time.
– Mahima Kapoor, India (Artist-in-Residence, 2018)
The L’AiR Arts Residency in Paris was a very intense and stimulating experience. I found the facilitated discussions extremely valuable to get constructive feedback on my art making. This feedback as well as conversations with the curator gave me a clear way forward with my art making. It was very convenient to have the studio space available to make planning sketches and connect with the other resident artists. I also found visiting the contemporary galleries, not-for-profit organisations, residencies, curators and gallerists very insightful and beneficial. The L’AiR Arts residency really promotes building your network in Paris. I also enjoyed presenting to the French primary school on South Africa, my artwork and Nelson Mandela. Thank you FIAP and L'AiR Arts for this exceptional experience - I came back inspired and enthused to continue making art.
- Sophia van Wyk, South Africa (Artist-in-Residence, 2018)
This was an in-depth introduction to the art historical legacy and contemporary art scenes in Paris today. Together with a wonderful team of historians and curators, we were able to gain access to many art venues, from major art museums and institutions hosted by their in-house representatives, to secluded historical sites, and artists studios, welcomed to local Paris-based arts communities. I highly recommend this for artists who seek deep immersion in the history and legacy of Paris and its profound influence on international art and culture.
