Le Soleil des Morts: Patrimoine des itinéraires, des réseaux et des connexions
This year's thematic focus of the European Heritage Days "Heritage Routes, Networks, and Connections" offers a unique opportunity to traverse the historic pathways of the past, unraveling invaluable insights for the present. Since its establishment in the 1870s amidst the rapid expansion of transportation, Atelier 11 Cité Falguière in Paris has remained a beacon for artists from diverse corners of Europe and beyond. Paris, renowned as both the heart of France and the epicenter of European culture, boasted one of the world's most extensive railway systems since the interwar period, rendering it a hub of connectivity and accessibility for artists worldwide.
During this pivotal era, the convergence of artists from various cultures, nationalities, and backgrounds fostered an explosion of artistic innovation, marking the advent of Modernism—a defining epoch in art history. Coined as the École de Paris or the School of Paris, the international cohort of artists congregated in the vibrant Montparnasse neighborhood, forming tight-knit artistic communities that nurtured exchange, inspiration, and collaboration. Cité Falguière emerged as a prominent epicenter of this cultural effervescence, hosting over a hundred French and international artists throughout its long-standing 150-year history.

Le Soleil des Morts or The Sun of the Dead exhibition aims to create a porous relationship between contemporary and modern art, highlighting the continued presence of past elements and creating a tangible connection between generations of artists. This dialogue between the living and the dead, between ghosts and presences, offers profound reflection on memory and cultural identity. The exhibition explores how identity, heritage, and architecture interact with cultural and bodily acts, inviting visitors to reflect on their own relationship to culture and heritage. It also questions the notion of movement and inertia in cultural consumption, highlighting the complex dynamics between tradition and modernity.
“The Sun of the Dead” is positioned as an act of salvation for the public good, demonstrating a strong commitment to space and history. The project aims to promote public awareness and echo the objectives of the European Heritage Days. By creating a powerful narrative, the exhibition seeks to raise awareness and promote the protection and enhancement of cultural heritage. This commitment is reflected in concrete actions to rehabilitate and preserve Atelier 11, the last surviving Atelier of Cité Falguière.
Le Soleil des Morts at Cité Falguière is much more than an art exhibition. It is an invitation to encounter and reflection, where the past and the present coexist harmoniously. By engaging the public in a dialogue about memory and identity, this project aspires to create a space where the heritage of the École de Paris, both ancient and contemporary, is preserved and celebrated.
