Paper Routes

Celebrating 10 Years of L’AiR Arts

Looking back at 10 years of L’AiR Arts, we celebrate a decade of international exchange, artistic research, and connection. What began as a small residency has grown into an international community, carrying forward the 150-year history of Atelier 11 Cité Falguière as a place for artists to live, work, and exchange ideas.

Over the past decade, L’AiR Arts has welcomed more than 220 artists and cultural professionals from over 60 countries. Through our residency and public programs, we continue to foster connections across borders, contributing to the living history of Atelier 11 and the wider legacy of Montparnasse as a hub of artistic exchange.

Paper Routes

As part of our 10th anniversary celebrations, L’AiR Arts presents Paper Routes, an alumni exhibition showcasing our founding values of creative connection while honoring resilience and collective determination. We remain deeply moved by the practices that have expanded through our programs and the steadfast friendships that continue to stretch across the world. Thank you for enriching the L’AiR Arts journey and for expanding our global community.

Curatorial Statement

The works gathered here reflect different artistic practices, histories, and ways of life, but share a material that has long carried ideas across distance. Paper can record a moment, hold a memory, travel from one place to another, and pass from one person to the next. In this sense, the works become traces of individual journeys as well as part of a larger network of exchange. Like artists whose influence crosses continents and generations, paper can also connect people and places across time and distance. Light enough to cross borders, yet durable enough to hold a lifetime of ideas, paper is like a portable home or studio. It can be folded, layered, marked, transformed, carried, and preserved. As artists have traced their stories to and from Paris, paper has remained a recurring material with endless potential: pliable, resilient, and capable of holding memory while being continually transformed.

The title Paper Routes speaks to these movements: the routes artists take through places and communities, the paths ideas travel between people, and the journeys that artworks make beyond the studio. Brought together at Atelier 11, these works create a temporary meeting point between different geographies, generations, and practices.

This exhibition also serves as a fundraiser supporting the preservation of the site and its artistic heritage through L’AiR Arts residencies and public programming. Thank you for helping us to continue this living history!
