Atelier 11 - Inaugural Photography Residency

Birth-marks / life-marks – 150 years of the artist studio

Fall 2021

L’AiR Arts invites photographic artists to join the inaugural photography residency and to situate their creative practice in the historical and contemporary context of the Parisian photographic scene. The residency will begin in September 2021 as part of the imminent restoration of the last preserved atelier of the historical artists community of Cité Falguière in Paris. The Atelier 11 cultural heritage project has been initiated with the vision of establishing an International Arts Research  Residence dedicated to the intercultural exchange as the legacy of the École de Paris.

Selected international and Paris-based artists will be welcomed to the Atelier 11 to document and bear witness to the cultural revival of this historic space, while meeting and engaging with photographic artists from other countries. The aim of this project is to celebrate the significance of the atelier as central to the international artist community that “birthed” many artists throughout its 150 years of artistic history.

Participating artists will be invited to produce a series of photographs of the atelier in their own style and approach, while reflecting on the role of the artist studio as a space for conceptualisation and creation, a lair where the artist lives, works, and develops ideas. This project will focus on the building in its current state: various architectural elements, cracks, marks and wrinkles of the building as witnesses of time and history. As such, creating an "atelier portrait" aimed to trace not only the physical history of the building that survived two world wars but also to reflect the often difficult past of its many residents, immigrant artists, in search of a new home and acceptance in Paris.

The main objectives of this project are to offer an opportunity for in-depth exploration of photography, as well as to support intercultural exchanges. Artists are invited to conduct research about the history of the site and have access to the Atelier 11 from mid August until December 2021 during various residency projects, and throughout the heritage restoration in 2022. During the photography program in September, artists will also have the opportunity to share ideas with their colleagues, expand their international network and participate in professional development activities and research visits to relevant cultural institutions in Paris.

The outcome of this photography research project will form an important archive and potentially culminate in an exhibition and publication to mark the beginning of the new chapter in the story of Cité Falguière historic artists community.
