Focusing on intercultural dialogue aligned with the inclusive spirit of the École de Paris, our residency facilitates artistic research by providing access to key sites inhabited by international artists from the late 19th century to the present day. 

To mark our 10th anniversary in France, L'AiR Arts has partnered with the Association Cité Falguière and the Columbia Global Paris Center to bring all these local organizations together under one umbrella: "Montparnasse International." With Atelier 11 Cité Falguière as a long-standing symbol of artistic Montparnasse, this district-wide community initiative represents the living history of the neighborhood by strengthening links between heritage institutions and contemporary spaces. By reclaiming this history, it reaffirms Montparnasse as a historic epicenter for global exchange and positions the École de Paris legacy as a vital, contemporary model for fostering international solidarity through artistic and cultural heritage. 

Montparnasse International Week

The inaugural edition of Montparnasse International Week will take place from November 15th to 21st, 2026. Launching in the days following Armistice Day (November 11), the event honors a historic turning point that reinforced shared values of peace and solidarity. It was precisely this postwar momentum that fueled the legendary inter-war period of the École de Paris, transforming Montparnasse into a thriving, borderless sanctuary for a diverse international community.

Today, this legacy remains a powerful model for cultural hospitality, demonstrating how the intersection of exile and creativity within a specific territory can produce a universal language of humanity. Building upon this foundation, the Montparnasse International initiative scales local heritage into a cultural ecosystem with global reach. The curated program of public events, site visits, and walking tours hosted by participating institutions, maps the district to showcase the enduring history of the École de Paris and its vibrant spaces for creative exchange today.

Global Symposium: Montparnasse and its Legacies

The 2026 Montparnasse International Week will open with a two-day Global Symposium hosted at Reid Hall on November 13 and 14. The symposium will trace the history of Montparnasse as a locus for creative innovation and migration. 

Call for speakers: We invite proposals from scholars, artists, practitioners, archivists, heritage professionals, and key actors in cultural mobility working both inside and outside academic institutions.

Contributions may take the form of a 20-minute academic paper, participation in a themed panel discussion, or a performance.

]]><![CDATA[Research in Progress: Cité Falguière Residents Archive]]>Wed, 24 Sep 2025 07:58:21 GMThttps://www.lairarts.com/news/research-in-progress-cite-falguiere-residents-archive​Following the 2025 European Heritage Days and our well-received exhibition on the women artists of Cité Falguière, we are excited to share our research online and unite the stories of the historical residents with those of our contemporary artists in a single, publicly accessible archive.

Home to more than a hundred historical residents, Cité Falguière is known for its prominent male artists, such as Amedeo Modigliani and Chaïm Soutine. As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the historic Atelier 11, we are committed to reconstructing the broader history of this exceptional community by uncovering the lives and work of the lesser-known women artists who also shaped it.

In addition to the last permanent resident of Atelier 11, the French artist of Serbian-Russian origin Mira Maodus (born 1942), we are pleased to share the stories of four historical women artists of the Cité Falguière:

Lilian de Glehn Thibaut (1872–1951), an English painter active during the Roaring Twenties, resident at 14 Cité Falguière from 1912–1938.

Mania Mavro (1889–1969), a painter born in the Russian Empire (present-day Ukraine), resident at 14 Cité Falguière between 1913–1914.

Zofia Piramowicz (1880–1958), a Polish painter of Armenian origin, resident at 7 Cité Falguière from 1926–1932.

Fanny Rozet (1881–1951), a sculptor and the first woman admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, resident at 9 Cité Falguière in 1914.

By bringing greater visibility to underrepresented artists, this initiative aims to document the personal histories of all those who have lived and worked at Cité Falguière — past, present, and future.

While we are unable to respond to all applicants due to the high volume of submissions and our limited capacity, we are deeply grateful for the time and effort you dedicated to preparing and sharing your work with us.

Residencies are awarded on a rolling basis, based on the review of each application and the availability of spots within our programs. Selected candidates will receive an official invitation letter detailing the residency dates, conditions, and next steps.

Applications remain open year-round through our no-fee, multi-program application form, welcoming artists and cultural professionals of all nationalities, disciplines, and career stages.

We invite artists and cultural professionals of all ages, from all countries and all creative disciplines to become a part of the long-standing artistic and cultural legacy, while fostering intercultural exchange and creative mobility. 

The 2025 open call offers individual art residencies, curated group programs and partnership opportunities. Full and partial scholarships as well as self-funded options are available. ​


Applications may be submitted on an ongoing basis with two deadlines per year - October 31st and April 30th.
