Mission & History
L’AiR Arts* is a not-for-profit organisation of general interest (une association à but non lucratif soumise à la loi 1901) with a mission to support intercultural exchange through international arts residency programs. In collaboration with leading arts institutions and professionals, our residency programs support intercultural exchange, research, professional development and contemporary creation – while promoting diversity, inclusion and international understanding through artistic and cultural heritage.
L’AiR Arts residency program grounds its commitment to contemporary arts within a historical perspective. Founded in 2016, L'AiR Arts was launched with the European Heritage Days / Journées du Patrimoine as an “Atelier sur Seine” artist residency, located near Fontainebleau at the original studio of the French-Algerian painter, Etienne Dinet. In 2018, L’AiR Arts moved to Paris to introduce curated group residency programs in partnership with local cultural institutions. Located in Montparnasse, known as a historic hub for international artists during the 20th century, L’AiR Arts program is dedicated to the intercultural artistic exchange as the legacy of the École de Paris.
In 2020, L’AiR Arts, in partnership with the Cité Falguière Association, launched a cultural heritage initiative to preserve the last remaining artist’s studio of the historic Cité Falguière community—once home to numerous French and international artists, including renowned figures such as Paul Gauguin, Amedeo Modigliani, Chaïm Soutine, Tsuguharu Foujita, and Constantin Brancusi. Built in 1875, Atelier 11 has remained true to its original purpose and historic identity for over 150 years. Today, it continues this legacy as an International Arts Research Residency, welcoming artists and cultural professionals from around the world. As the emblematic home of L’AiR Arts, Atelier 11 hosts self-directed residencies, curated group programs, partner initiatives, and public events that engage both local and international communities.
*L'AiR Arts name is a French version of a standard acronym for Artists-in-Residence, it can also be read as lair or a studio / atelier where an artist lives, works, and develops ideas - a safe haven designed to support the creative process.

I’m so happy to know L’AiR Arts have emerged from the pandemic stronger and more committed and engaged than ever. This new development, the use and restoration of Atelier 11, is brilliant, harmonious with your mission, and historically important, looking both forward and back. Bravo to all involved.
