In October 2022, for the first time in its history, Atelier 11 participates in the annual National Architecture Days on the theme "Architecture to live in"
On the occasion of National Architecture Days, we invite you to explore Atelier 11 from a historical, architectural, social and environmental point of view, featuring a group exhibition by our past and present artists in residence.
Exhibition on view
October 15 - 23
Saturday & Sunday 11h to 18h
Tuesday to Friday by appointment
Atelier 11 Cité Falguière, 75015 Paris
Come and discover a typical 19th Century atelier, with its unique history as a living and creative space that has survived two world wars and still remains despite decades of urban renewal. Built by artists for artists, the architecture of the Cité Falguière was designed to be a place of life, work and intercultural exchange. French artist Paul Gauguin was one of the first inhabitants and was then followed by generations of international artists eager to explore Paris and its freedom of creation, such as Modigliani, Soutine, Brancusi, Foujita, and most recently Mira Maodus (from 1979 to 2021). This ongoing artistic inhabitation of the Cité Falguière makes it one of the oldest international artists' residencies in the world - which now operates as an International Arts Research Residency, hosting artists from all over the world.
As one of the last examples of a vibrant artistic hub in the heart of Montparnasse, the Atelier 11 of the Cité Falguière must be restored and renovated in order to continue welcoming and supporting artists. As we embark on the next stage of this ambitious project, we explore how to continue 150 years of artistic history in a contemporary architectural setting.
A recipient of Mission Patrimoine 2022, Atelier 11 carries within its walls a rich history that must be valued and passed on, while allowing contemporary residents to live and create within it. Thinking about the architecture of an artist's studio means considering the smallest details to give free reign to creativity and experimentation: materials, light, space... Before restoration and renovation begins, come and discover the progress of the architectural project of this unique space, featuring a 3D animation of the future Atelier 11 developed by gh3* – a Toronto-based architecture practice, in collaboration with local and international team of architects, cultural professionals and the artists themselves.
