Martie Holmer, NYC, United States
New York artist Martie Holmer practices an intuitive approach to making art: art directed by idea and technique following idea. And, she believes in play. Holmer is often referred to as a painter because of her love of color, however she continues to work with a variety of materials, and her study of Chinese calligraphy can be seen in gestural lines, be it sculpture, collage or painting. Her early professional work took inspiration from the field of textiles, laying a foundation for formal explorations bringing together the mathematical underpinnings of structure, and the purposeful use of color in altering it. Increasingly, her interest in impermanence of materials, or repurposed past work may correspond to ideas in music - linear and fleeting. Her own musical interests may find their way into the work she’s now exploring.
She has exhibited work in New England and in New York and Rome, and been a recipient of grants and residencies, including the MacDowell Colony numerous times. Holmer is also a dedicated educator, teaching color and composition in the Experimental and Foundation Studies program at Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, R.I. |
