Marcela Cantuária
Brazil Marcela Cantuária is looking forward to present a new body of work of her research Mátria Livre, which she has been carrying out since 2016, developing, through a plastic-formal vocabulary, narratives on how to re-enchant female figures in the struggle against capital, colonialism and patriarchy. The backbone of the series is to revere those who built and competed for spaces in politics, struggling with theory and practice.
According to critic and curator Clarissa Diniz, “her paintings establish images in which these women are not the index of a lost battle, but icons of a freed and matriarchal territoriality: historicity based on a future already inhabited by them insofar as their stories constituted it and that allowed it to arrive here in the form of a future in struggle”. Such propositions, therefore, act both as an affirmation of the identity of Latin American women made invisible by hegemonic narratives, and as a contribution to the fabulation of other possibilities. |
Ricko Leung
Hong Kong / France Ricko Leung's artistic practice is marked by an interest in seeking a deeper understanding of the human experience through exploring the complex relationship between personal experiences and wider social, political, and natural environments.
At the open studio, Ricko Leung will present a group of never-before-exhibited artworks. An installation related to book censorship, completed during the residency, together with some recently created mixed-media and photography works on the issue of surveillance, illustrating how the interplay of fear and control has influenced the human experience in both the past and present. Fear and control under the patriarchal power dynamics brings violence and traumas. Mixed-media artworks combining ceramic, textile and photography will be on display, inviting the viewer to confront the difficult realities of trauma, which are often marginalised by society, and to find healing in the midst of pain. |
