Marie Yan, France
During the open studio Marie Yan will do a reading from the work-in-progress Hong Kong: about a struggling home [temporary title] "I need to go back in time. In some of my childhood memories, where I learned or guessed what being Chinese, or even, being mixed-race Asian meant here. Then I might be able to start understanding what belonging to Hong Kong means. I lived there in 2021, as the city-State was losing more and more of its civil freedoms. Presenting this reading of work-in- progress excerpts and a few pieces of archives, I boil to the surface embodied colonial remnants and share fragments of reflections and fiction that will eventually form the essay on belonging and political agency Hong Kong: about a struggling home." Start time: 19h Duration: 1 hour Language: English |
Ling-lin Ku, Taiwan / United States
During the open studio Ling-lin Ku will present her ongoing, interdisciplinary project “Gargoyles,” exploring the intersection between architecture, sculpture, mythology, infrastructure and natural disaster through multimedia sound and sculptural installation. The term gargoyle originally translates as “gullet” or “protruding gutter” and traditionally gargoyles serve as decorative elements masking the function of carrying water away from a building. Though initially functional, the embellished architectural elements have taken on narrative roles as well, existing in a realm between myth, object, and purpose. As an artist my goal is to redefine and expand the definition of contemporary art. Using ideas of flow, narrative, and ornamentation, I will present a body of multimedia sculpture that reimagine architectural elements, engaging video animations, narrative objects and images, and contextually derived sound, pitting the viewer in a space that straddles different forms of existence. |
