Robynn Smith, United States
Robynn Smith was raised in New York, where she received a BFA in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design. She then moved to California, where she received her MFA from San Jose State University. Robynn currently lives in Santa Cruz, California.
After a decade making ceramic sculpture, she began making prints in the 1980's. Her practice now embraces mixed media work with a basis in printmaking. "My work is a visual record of my connection to the world. Pilgrimage to places of historical and psychological impact has led me to imagery I use to travel between the present and the past, connecting the dots of humanity’s magnificent opportunities and repeated mistakes. Contrasting images create spirited narratives. Lines blur and connections are made. Borders are drawn and crossed. Profoundly spiritual observations are presented alongside the moral bankruptcy of war. |
I explore these dualities through physical processes and imagery. Through layered techniques, the paintings and prints reveal moments of beauty and horror. The tactile subtleties of surfaces contrast with images of catastrophe and destruction. Embedded photographic processes focus and sharpen the impact of the imagery, creating a surprising visual language that reaches places of submerged memory and subconscious reality."
Robynn's enjoyed many international exhibitions and residencies including the Franz Masereel Centrum, Islensk Grafik and the Ragdale Foundation. With vast teaching experience in a wide variety of disciplines, she can often be found teaching and delivering lectures both at home and abroad.
Robynn is the Professor Emeritus Monterey Peninsula College and the founder of Print Day in May. Created in 2007, PDM is a community building, annual celebration of printmaking involving all 50 US states, and over 60 countries throughout the world.
