Mayumi Lashbrook, Canada

Mayumi Lashbrook is an accomplished dance artist, choreographer, Artistic Director, educator and arts administrator residing in Tkaronto (colonially known as Toronto), Canada. She is a mixed race Japanese English settler who strives to increase connection, visibility and diversity in the Canadian arts landscape through on and off stage initiatives. She sees embodiment as at the crux of world making, providing alternatives to unconscious thought, consumerism and oppression. She performs as a way to find connection, commonality and vulnerability in others. Mayumi is interested in choreography that communicates through dynamic, fluid, powerful, delicate, weighted, intricate and agile physicality.

Mayumi is the Co-Artistic Director and social media liaison of Aeris Körper Contemporary Dance. She performs, choreographs, facilitates and produces work with the company in Hamilton, Ontario. She is a mentee in Butoh and composition with renowned Japanese Canadian dance theatre artist Denise Fujiwara as well as a company member of Fujiwara Dance Inventions. She is an integral member of Dreamwalker Dance Company with work spanning performance, creative producing and facilitation of their Conscious Bodies methodology.

Mayumi’s different roles are all encompassing and overlapping. This enables her to approach projects and communities with openness, curiosity, excellence, and with deep satisfaction. 

Mayumi is part of the L'AiR Arts' ongoing cohort of international artists from Multidisciplinary residency.
She will be returning for a solo residency to research Japanese French painter Léonard Foujita - one of the historical residents of Cité Falguière in Paris.
