Examining Foujita’s work and life supports my understanding of myself as a Nikkei* artist and my role in honouring traditional and modern, past and present. As a woman of mixed race, I often question my sense of belonging and place within the Japanese diaspora. Seeing my own quandaries through another artist’s legacy supports my ability to evaluate my role within the international arts ecology. |

Nikkei is a term used to describe those of Japanese ancestry, who are not citizens of Japan. Uchi / Soto translates to inside / outside, but the meaning for Japanese customs and sociolinguistics goes deeper. These terms encompass the differences between inner and outer social groups. For Foujita, he experienced integration and alienation in both Japan and France. As a Nikkei and mixed race woman, Mayumi experiences similar tensions in her identity and sense of belonging. The films and live performance Mayumi is offering all speak to this middle space she inhabits with Foujita.
