L'Atelier 11 Cité Falguière:
150 Years of Living Heritage / 150 Ans de Patrimoine Vivant
For the 2023 European Heritage Days on the theme "Living Heritage", you are invited to discover the living heritage of Atelier 11 Cité Falguière through the creative process of contemporary artists, while learning about the ongoing community struggle for the protection of this living heritage.
Built by artists for artists in the mid 19th century, Atelier 11 is the last surviving studio of one of the world's oldest and longest-running international artists' residencies. A unique space of modernity and intercultural exchanges, Cité Falguière was once a vibrant multicultural community, home to hundreds of French and international artists, including renowned masters of the École de Paris, such as Constantin Brâncuși, Tsuguharu Foujita, Paul Gauguin, Amedeo Modigliani and Chaïm Soutine. In the 1960s, the urban modernisation of the Montparnasse neighbourhood caused the progressive destruction of the Cité Falguière’s artist studios. Ever since, the local community has been striving for the protection and recognition of this cultural heritage.
After more than 60 years of community efforts, L'AiR Arts has joined the Cité Falguière Association and initiated the legacy project to continue the living heritage of the École de Paris through contemporary arts residency programs. In 2022, Atelier 11 Cité Falguière finally became institutionally recognized, receiving support from the Fondation du Patrimoine for the newly developed Cultural Heritage Project of establishing an International Arts Research Residency.
The Fondation du Patrimoine’s support will contribute to the restoration of the Atelier 11’s exterior facades, preserving the architectural heritage of this remarkable building. To continue welcoming contemporary artists and cultural professionals, further funding remains to be established for the interior renovations and programming.
We invite you to join us in our community efforts to preserve the Atelier 11's living heritage for the generations to come.
15 September: school visits 11h - 16h
16 & 17 September: public visits 11h - 18h

Paris-based visual artist Anna Peter-Breton is inviting you to the most cherished places of her human and artistic journey. Originally from Hungary and descendant of Kyrgyz nomads, Anna's imagination is rich in memories and encounters, forever infused within her spirit of travel. In her travel journals, watercolors are Anna’s way of recording and remembering charismatic figures and events.
The exhibition brings together a unique selection of paintings from Anna’s various “Voyages” series, some of which are also depicted in the “Voyage Amoureux” book series. You can also get an insight into the artist's distinct creative process by reading through some of her original travel journals. |
Foujita Foujita with Mayumi Lashbrook
Film Premiere in France!
Produced as part of L’AiR Arts Residency, Foujita Foujita is a playful look at the life of Japanese French painter Léonard Foujita Tsuguharu. A man who straddled two countries, known for his absurd and iconic looks, Foujita and his vast portfolio is a treasured part of art history.
The Japanese-Canadian choreographer Mayumi Lashbrook experiences similar tensions in her identity and sense of belonging. She embodies Foujita’s determination and shameless drive for notoriety and pays homage to the painter’s heyday in Paris, France when he was living next to Modigliani and Soutine in Cité Falguière - the historic location where the film is shot. Foujita Foujita is a glimpse at a Japanese visionary building a legacy within Eurocentric standards during the Roaring Twenties.
