Residents 2018
Curated Professional Program
“This was an in-depth introduction to the art historical legacy and contemporary art scenes in Paris today. Together with a wonderful team of historians and curators, we were able to gain access to many art venues, from major art museums and institutions hosted by their in-house representatives, to secluded historical sites, and artists studios, welcomed to local Paris-based arts communities. I highly recommend this for artists who seek deep immersion in the history and legacy of Paris and its profound influence on international art and culture.”
- Marie Thibeault, artist and Professor of Art at California State University,
Los Angeles, United States (Artist-in-Residence, 2018)
"The L’AiR Arts Residency in Paris was a very intense and stimulating experience. I found the Public Presentation and facilitated discussions extremely valuable to get constructive feedback on my art making. This feedback as well as conversations with the curator gave me a clear way forward with my art making. It was very convenient to have the studio space available to make planning sketches and connect with the other resident artists. I also found visiting the contemporary galleries, not-for-profit organisations, residencies, curators and gallerists very insightful and beneficial. The L’AiR Arts residency really promotes building your network in Paris. I also enjoyed presenting to the French primary school on South Africa, my artwork and Nelson Mandela. Thank you FIAP and L'AiR Arts for this exceptional experience - I came back inspired and enthused to continue making art."
- Sophia van Wyk, South Africa (Artist-in-Residence, 2018)
"This Residency was everything I could have hoped for - a great balance between historical and contemporary art, artists and art practices plus so much to inspire my own art practice and creativity. Getting to connect and network with fellow artists and be introduced to those that are working with the arts community in Paris are all connections I know are going to help me into the future of my arts career. I have already come up with my next art series based on feedback I received from conversation with the residency curator, which in itself is gold to me. I would recommend this residency to any artist at any point in their career, as such experiences are beneficial regardless of where you are in your process or on your path. I would even consider applying to this program again in the future to have the opportunity for new connections to be made!"
- Suki Valentine, New York City, United States (Artist-in-Residence, 2018)
"Participating in L'AiR Arts Residency was a great experience for my artistic career. The program provided an excellent professional development platform for me to network, share skills, exchange ideas and meet international and local contemporary artists, curators, and visit galleries and museums in Paris."
- Fatima Garzan, Canada / Iran (Artist-in-Residence, 2018)
“My experience with L'AiR Arts has been rewarding from the beginning. I was very fortunate to receive partial scholarship and the opportunity to exchange an artwork with a collector overseas. The intensive research into the historical and contemporary art world during my residency in Paris, was well organised and accurately structured. What otherwise would have been inaccessible for me, the residency provided me with a unique exposure, which I believe to be as essential for a young artist like me starting to move her way into the global art world. I believe such experiences provided by L'AiR Arts, and supporters of art to be instrumental in an artist's career. Transparency, support and genuinity is everything that L'AiR Arts offered to me.”
– Mahima Kapoor, India (Artist-in-Residence, 2018)
"The residency’s program allowed us to visit and meet artists in their studios, gallerists and see so much art. Very knowledgeable guides provided insights to our visits of Montmartre, Montparnasse and Barbizon. The residency provided a wonderful opportunity to visit Paris from the point of view of an artist as well as the chance to learn from the other participants who came from all over the world. This cultural exchange program fits perfectly with the mandate of the international Centre where we stayed, it was a great experience for all."
